Project: multi-touch table
Posted By Mike Bender ~ 22nd September 2010
This post is the first of what should be many to come. I have decided to put a project that I have long had on hold (2 years or so). I am going to build a multi-touch table like the Microsoft Surface for myself. I have long read on this product and dreamed to have one, but alas I just don’t have $12,000 laying around to drop on one of these. Being a bit of a DIYer I have decided to take up the journey that many have and build my own!
At this point details are a bit sketchy as I am still in a bit of a research phase, but some things I do believe to be pretty much locked in stone for now. First I will be making use of a projector I have had laying around for some time now for the rear project. It is a classic NEC VT45 LCD project. I will also be using my desktop PC to power it for now and a PS3 eye with IR bandpass modification for object detection.
Currently I am fairly certain I am going to use Laser Light Plane (LLP) but am still investigating Rear Diffused Illumination (DI).
As for a software platform I will be working inside of .NET using C# and WPF. From initial research I am thinking that WPF 4.0 with the Microsoft Surface SDK and the MultiTouchVista HID driver will more than likely be my development platform. I may use CCV by the NUI group.
Stay tuned for much more to come!
(can’t wait for my PS-3 eye to arrive!)
